Director of IAS, Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences, Fellow of the World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries (TWAS). Prof. Tang obtained his Bachelor's degree in mathematics from Peking University in 1984, and in 1989, he received his PhD in applied mathematics from the University of Leeds, UK. Prof. Tang was widely known for his expertise in the fields of computational mathematics and computational fluid dynamics. In recent years, his research has been focusing on Computational Mathematics and Computational Fluid Dynamics.
He was awarded the Feng Kang Prize of Scientific Computing, the Natural Science Award by the Ministry of Education of China, and the National Natural Science Award of China. In 2018, he was invited to deliver an invited lecture at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM'18). Prof. Tang serves as the editor-in-chief or editorial board member of several international mathematical journals. He has long been committed to the popularization and promotion of mathematical culture, founding the journal "Mathematical Culture" and serving as editor-in-chief.
The research postgraduate program in Applied Mathematics offers an interdisciplinary program of graduate study in Applied Mathematics leading to the PhD degree. This program is designed to give students a thorough training in fundamental Applied Mathematics and to develop their research ability in a specific application field. The fields of application include a wide range of areas such as fluid mechanics, materials science, and mathematical biology, engineering applications, image processing, and mathematical finance. The training essential for future careers in Applied Mathematics in academia, national laboratories, or in industry is provided by completion of the requirements for a PhD degree in Applied Mathematics.
