This lecture is jointly organised by IAS, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Interdisciplinary Research and Application for Data Science (IRADS) and Faculty of Science and Technology (FST).

Abstract:
The intersection of statistical learning and strategic optimization has achieved remarkable advancements in domains such as human-like control, generative artificial intelligence, large language models, and personalized treatment. These advancements have found profound applications in the digital economy and intelligent society. This talk will explore the emergence of intelligent data science, underscoring its critical role in societal applications. We will illustrate its utility through various applications including the development of precise socio-economic indices, detection of financial statement fraud, interpretation of financial news sentiments, and more.


About the Speaker:
Professor Jianqing Fan, a world-renowned statistician, is an academician of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium and the Frederick L. Moore '18 Professor of Finance, Professor of Statistics, and Professor of Operations Research and Financial Engineering at Princeton University. He is a fellow of the International Statistical Institute (ISI), the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS), the American Statistical Association (ASA), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and the Society of Financial Econometrics (SoFiE). He was the past president of IMS and the International Chinese Statistical Association (ICSA), as well as the co-editor (in chief) of several top international academic journals. He is the winner of the 2000 COPSS Presidents' Award, the Morningside Gold Medal for Applied Mathematics (2007), Guggenheim Fellow (2009), Pao-Lu Hsu Prize (2013), Guy Medal in Silver (2014), Noether Distinguished Scholar (2018) and so on. He has made outstanding contributions in the fields of non-parametric modeling, high-dimensional statistics, machine learning, artificial intelligence, network analysis, deep learning, data science, financial economics, and bioinformatics.

1. This lecture will be counted for the course "Contemporary World and China". Please arrive at least 10 minutes in advance.

2. "Contemporary World and China" is a required course. Students are required to attend at least 10 lectures within their first two years of study. Upon completion of 10 lectures, students will be given a Grade S (Satisfactory). For those who attend fewer than 10 lectures, a Grade U (Unsatisfactory) will be given. The grade result of this course will not be included in the GPA calculation.
