The bronze ritual vessel ding, a quintessential artifact of ancient Chinese civilization, symbolizes state power and exemplifies the perfect amalgamation of technology, art, and mind. The Houmuwu Ding, the largest known unearthed bronze ritual vessel to date, was rediscovered in 1939 in a grand tomb within the royal cemetery at Yinxu, the last capital site of the Shang Dynasty. About the Speaker

Zhichun Jing (Canada Research Chair in Pacific Asia Archaeology, University of British Columbia; Visiting Professor, UIC Institute of Advanced Study).

Professor Jing earned his Ph.D. in Archaeology from the University of Minnesota in 1994 and has been teaching at the University of British Columbia's Department of Anthropology since 2002. His research interests span early urbanism, Shang civilization, geoarchaeology, ancient technologies, isotopic analysis, petrography of ceramics, and the materiality and social aspects of ancient jades.
